Just take a few minutes to go over the information below to make sure you don’t forget anything and to avoid any unpleasant surprises when you get there. Please try and learn a few phrases in Italian – hello, goodbye, please, thank you.. etc..
Also, do not forget that Italian standards are different from American standards, it is a foreign country after all!! And that’s also what we love about it! Please be respectful of Italian customs, keep in mind that you are a representative of your country when abroad, and you’ll be on your way to the vacation of a lifetime! One last piece of advice – PACK LIGHT!
Don’t leave home without checking these off:
- Valid Passport
- Insurance information
- Itinerary and Hotel List
- Plane ticket
- Valid Credit cards (notify your banks about your trip so they don’t get blocked – also, for ATM cards – know your 4 digit PIN
- Best to arrive with a small amount of Euros then you can use your debit card to get cash as needed.
- Photocopies of important documents: Passport and credit cards (both sides – with phone numbers)
- Copy of emergency information for yourself: emergency contact, allergies to food, any medications that you are taking and blood type etc…
- Take Tylenol or Motrin with you….some of these type of over the counter meds require prescriptions
- Give a copy of your itinerary and hotel list to family
- Put a copy of your hotel list in your checked luggage
- Plug adaptors for cell phones/camera, computers etc.. (do not bring a blow dryer unless it is a dual-voltage dryer. You can purchase these at any luggage store or Amazon). Hotels will have blow dryers but if needing a flat-iron or anything else, you can either purchase a dual-voltage before leaving the states or buy one when you arrive in Italy.
- Small collapsible bag for souvenirs
- Camera
- Travel alarm clock
- Travel size umbrella
- Flip flops for the beach
- Money belt. Optional. Always keep your belongings in your front pocket or in a closable purse that you can hold tightly in front of you for when you are in highly crowded areas like buses, and other public transportation
- Lightweight water-proof jacket
- Color coordinate your wardrobe and dress in layers! The weather is unpredictable – it may be cool in the morning and warm up in the afternoon
- Jeans are ok, as long as they are in a darker wash/color (actually many Italians wear jeans but for packing reasons, they may be too bulky+
- Comfortable footwear – suitable for walking on cobbled stones or uneven streets.
- No matter what they say about not wearing tennis shoes…..take them anyway but if possible keep them in a darker color! You will absolutely need the MOST comfortable shoes!
- Bring small travel size toiletries knowing you can purchase larger sizes, if needed, once you arrive. There are many stores.
- Women only: A personal suggestion, wearing light mini-pads can help with your nightly laundry as well as getting caught in a restroom with no toilet paper.
